We are very sad to report the death of Carol Venner - a hugely influential early member of Horsham & District Riding Club for over 30 years. She became a committee member in 1968, served as Chairman 1970-74, and was appointed Joint-President with myself between 1997 and 2003. She was a loyal friend & great organiser and served on the Open Show Committee for many years.

Not only was she generous to the Riding Club with her time but also the use of her home in Colgate, which was the venue for many happy committee meetings and AGMs during the 1970s. She was also generous in her sponsorship of the Open Show and presented a number of trophies, some of which are still awarded annually. On her retirement she was made an Honorary member of Horsham & District Riding Club and was presented with a beautiful limited edition watercolour “A Woodland Bridlepath” which I know she treasured.

After moving to Wiltshire in 1989 she took on the role of Trade Stands Organiser for Longleat Horse Trials and served on her area BHS Committee.

We send our condolences to her son Jon and daughter Katharine Richardson (herself a valued committee member for HDRC for a number of years). Carol’s husband Michael who predeceased her was HDRC’s Treasurer 1969-70.

Donations in Carol’s memory to Dementia UK can be sent to Arthur W Mays Funeral Directors, 52 Warminster Road, Westbury, Wiltshire BA13 3PF  (email: arthurwmays@btinternet.com
